Modern Quilting – Colour
by Robyn B
This is the final in my series of my thoughts regarding the modern quilt movement and it is on colour use. I see:
- the use of predominantly clear colours
- and more saturated colour within fabric
- many fabric ranges have white undertones
- white solid followed by grey solids are popular
- earthy colours are seldom used
- jewel tones are also seldom used

interesting comments about colour – so modern quilting is not just about style? – pity! I think all the pinks are a bit naff!
Struggling to understand your comment Susan (sorry). How can Modern Quilting just be about style? Surely the degree of contrast of colours (whatever colour that may be) plays a big part in a Modern Quilt or indeed any quilt, it is what makes a quilt! Stand alone pink may be ‘naf’ so start playing with the colours around it and watch it change, lessen its impact on the eye. Then again, Modern Quilting is always evolving and changing – what will come next?
These topics were covered in more detail just a couple of months ago. What’s changed?
Regardless of whether or not the subject of colour was discussed earlier 2012 I feel what Robyn has written is a good, clear summary of the current use of colour.
