This is number three in the series – this time considering construction techniques within modern quilting. Trends I see are:

- improvisational piecing

- the use of a greater mixture of fabrics often pulled together by a solid (grey or white most often)

- machine piecing and quilting

- not much applique

- some hand quilting, but usually with thicker thread and bigger than traditional stitches

- no (or little) fusible webbing used

- no embellishing with beads, fancy threads, etc.

- no excuse for poor workmanship

- lots of straight line quilting

- quilting is usually done on domestic machines rather than using commercial machine quilters

Am an art quilter who has fallen in love with fresh/modern quilting. I have a project called “Nuns On Wheels” and I make lap quilts for wheelchair-bound retired nuns. I can’t wait to start making some modern quilts. I think they are awesome!
